SUMMER SAFETY FOR DOGS AND CATS

Body Copy

When the sun comes out, we love to get outside and make the most of it. But dogs and cats can struggle in hot weather, so it’s important us pet parents learn how to keep them cool and aware of other seasonal dangers.

We asked our experts to give us their hints and tips to help our cats and dogs stay safe in the warmer months. Here’s what they told us…

KEEP THEIR FOOD PET-FRIENDLY

On a hot day, us humans enjoy a cold ice cream or a refreshing drink. Our dogs can’t have exactly the same as us, but it’s easy to whip up some delicious treats to help them stay cool in the heat – check out these cooling summer treat recipes and ideas for dogs. And if you’re firing up the barbecue, don’t share BBQ food with your dog.

Help cats and dogs stay cool

Our poor pets don’t have sweat glands all over their bodies like we do. When the temperature shoots up, they can’t always cool down. Find out how to keep your pet cool when it’s hot, plus get advice on summer dog walks and protecting your pet in these summer safety tips from Marc the Vet.

Prepare for pet travel

The rules for travelling with our pet companions have changed post-Brexit. Pet passports issued in Great Britain aren’t valid in the EU or Northern Ireland any longer. You might have heard about Animal Health Certificates, which have to be issued for each trip to these locations. There are also other considerations when travelling with pets, too, such as microchipping and vaccinations. Take a look at our quick post-Brexit travel guide to find out how to get away with a cat or dog.

Stay safe at the seaside

Lots of dogs love the beach but some seaside locations only allow dogs on the beach outside of peak summer season, while other places are dog friendly. When we head to the coast, it’s important to make sure we avoid potential dangers to our canine companions – like all that sun and saltwater. See how to enjoy the seaside with your pet.

Beware of pet perils in the garden

Of course, our cats and dogs want to enjoy some summer fun in the garden, but as well as too much heat and the parasites such as fleas and ticks that are even more prevalent in summer months, there are other considerations too. Certain plants can be toxic to pets and bee and wasp stings can be nasty too, so find out what to do in a sting situation.
